Book Definition In 3 Idiots: The Memorable Dialogues And Songs From The Film

3 Idiots is a Bollywood movie released on 25th December 2009. 3 idiots is the "Highest grossing Bollywood movie of all time." The movie is loosely based on a novel by Chetan Bhagat "Five Point Someone". It is a movie directed by Raju Hirani, Produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Actors include Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, R. Madhavan, Omi Vaidya, Boman Irani and Kareena Kapoor.

Until the end of 3 Idiots, the thing I am most impressed by is a different definition of happiness. You will be happy as long as you cherish your friendship and evaluate your mental health, never stop being creative and never give up your dream. When you live for your passion, success will follow you, no matter how challenging life is.

Book Definition In 3 Idiots

On one of the first days in his new class, a professor, unnerved by the enthusiastic nature by a certain yellow-shirted student, asks him to stand up and name the definition of a machine. Rancho explains to the whole class that a machine is any instrument that makes life a little easier, giving the example of a fan and a pant-zipper. Not amused, the professor picks on another student, Chatur. Chatur has memorized the textbook definition and recites it, perfectly, word-by-word to the professor.

There is a scene in the film where Rancho's professor asks him what a machine is. He describes it in simple words but it does not seem to fit right with the professor who is expecting a text-book definition. The scene ends on a funny note when the professor asks him to get out of the room.

I've never had the thought that "I'm surrounded by idiots." Still, when my mentor recommended Thomas Erikson's "Surrounded by Idiots" as a good resource for understanding how different personalities communicate and deal with feedback, it piqued my interest.

DISC stands for dominance, inspiration/influence, stability/steadiness, and compliance, which are the four personality traits posited by psychologist William Moulton Marston in his 1928 book "Emotions of Normal People." "Surrounded by Idiots" uses the colors Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue, respectively, to refer to these four personality styles.

One shortcoming of the book is that it doesn't provide a DISC assessment tool, but a Google search brought up a free, quick DISC test, which seemed accurate based on my reading "Surrounded by Idiots." I recommend taking a DISC assessment before reading the book to get a more personal experience.

This is the basis for the book's title. Erikson observed a Red who ran a company that was "full of idiots." The reason this Red person considered them idiots is that they didn't work hard and quickly as he did. Yet, without them, the company wouldn't succeed.

Erikson says it's rare for challenging combinations (such as Blue/Yellow and Red/Green) to get along, especially when those traits are within one person. But simply learning about these personality types has helped me gain a better understanding of myself and quieted the self-critical voices. In other words, I'm less likely to see myself as one of the idiots I'm surrounded by.

The Two Treatises of Government were published in 1689, longafter the rebellion plotted by the Country party leaders had failed tomaterialize and after Shaftsbury had fled the country for Holland anddied. The introduction of the Two Treatises was written afterthe Glorious Revolution of 1688, and gave the impression that the bookwas written to justify the Glorious Revolution. We now know that theTwo Treatises of Government were written during the Exclusioncrisis in 1681 and may have been intended in part to justify thegeneral armed rising which the Country Party leaders wereplanning.

Having read the book (that has now reached some sort of a cult status in certain circles) and watched the movie, I personally think the copying has been rather significant. And not a mere 3-5%! However, I must also state that Abhijit Joshi, the script writer (along with Hirani) packed in some brilliant new scenes and sub-plots whilst adapting the book theme.

In the 3 idiots controversy, the dispute is whether the contract of assignment has been duly honoured or not, and not whether Bhagat is the author of 3 idiots or not. I'm sure Bhagat does not claim to be.

If Bhagat contributed substantially to the 3 idiots script, he is treated as a "joint author" under the law. The argument therefore is that by denying his authorship (albeit "joint" status), the producers have violated his moral right to attribution.

Thanks for the informative post. You say that if Bhagat contributed something substantial to the script then he ought to be treated as a "joint author" under the law. The Indian Copyright Statute defines a work of joint authorship as the work produced by the 'collaboration' of two or more authors in which the contribution of one author is not distinct from the contribution of the other author or authors. Does this definition imply that, to constitute joint authorship, there must be a common design and a common intent to produce a particular work? The ordinary meaning of collaboration is people working together in an intersection of common goals. I believe that in England, joint authorship requires prior common design. I know that the Delhi High Court in the Najma Heptulla case had adopted the English position on joint authorship. The US Copyright statute is more direct in defining a joint work: "a work prepared by two or more authors with the 'intention' that their contributions be merged into inseparable or interdependent parts of a unitary whole." Therefore, substantial contributions to the movie 'The Autobiography of Malcom X' by Aalmuhammed did not make him a joint author in the case Aalmuhammed v. Lee because there was no prior intent or design to create a joint work. A similar authority in the context of a theater play is Thomson v. Larson. How does this play out in the context of the whole controversy? Can Mr. Bhagat be a 'joint author' of the movie script? Is common design or intent necessary to prove joint authorship? Should this prong be satisfied before looking at whether the script draws substantially from the book?

I would think that the very existence of an express contract for "attribution" and payment itself signals the intention of the film-makers to build on the underlying book by Bhagat. Although the parties did not sit at one table and complete the entire process of "adaptation", it's clear that the final piece of work embodies both sets of contributions. One might argue that both parties anticipated and bargained for this in their contract. Our Indian section is broad enough to encompass this as a work of joint authorship.

Mr. Shamshad, I am a new student to copyright laws in my MBA course and am making a project on 3 idiots controversy. I got great insights from ur article. I hope you would not mind if i use your article for my project :-). I will also mention this link and your name as a source in my college report in the acknowlegement
